چکیده

he prevalence of congestive heart failure (CHF), chronic schemic heart disease, and diabetes mellitus is increasing in ost societies, and it is not surprising that in most large linical trials of CHF at least 75% of patients have underying ischemic heart disease while approximately 20% to 5% of patients have diabetes (1,2). There is strong evidence hat the presence of diabetes in patients with CHF is an ndependent marker of adverse prognosis (3), and it has lso been suggested that outcomes tend to be worse in atients with ischemic, as distinct from non-ischemic, ardiomyopathy (4).

Evaluation of transesophageal echocardiography in detecting cardiac sources of emboli in ischemic stroke patients

Background: Embolus is one of the causes of ischemic stroke that can be due to cardiac sources such as valvular heart diseases and atrial fibrillation and atheroma of the aorta. Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is superior in identifying potential cardiac sources of emboli. Due to insufficient data on TEE findings in ischemic stroke in Iran, the present study was done to evaluate TEE in...

Diabetes and ischemia: similarities in cardiac energy metabolism

Ischemic heart disease (IHD) and diabetes mellitus (DM) are leading causes of death worldwide. Cardiac energy metabolism is profoundly altered in both of these conditions, which can lead to permanent cardiac pathologies that include heart failure and diabetic cardiomyopathy. Diabetic hearts show an increased dependence on oxidation of fatty acids for the production of adenosine triphosphate (AT...

Evaluation of Cardiac Mitochondrial Function by a Nuclear Imaging Technique using Technetium-99m-MIBI Uptake Kinetics

Mitochondria play an important role in energy production for the cell. The proper function of a myocardial cell largely depends on the functional capacity of the mitochondria.  Therefore it is necessary to establish a novel and reliable method for a non-invasive assessment of mitochondrial function and metabolism in humans. Although originally designed for evaluating myocardial perfusion, 99mTc...

The relation between body mass index and prevalence of ischemic heart disease in type 2 diabetic patients

Background: The transition from communicable to non-communicable diseases has occurred over many years in all countries of the world, even in developing countries. Diabetes and its ischemic heart complication are among the most important second groupe diseases. In recent years, discussions about the role of obesity and weight gain have risen again as a risk factor for both diseases. Our objecti...

Influence of diabetes mellitus on heart failure risk and outcome

Our aim is to summarize and discuss the recent literature linking diabetes mellitus with heart failure, and to address the issue of the optimal treatment for diabetic patients with heart failure. THE STUDIES LINKING DIABETES MELLITUS (DM) WITH HEART FAILURE (HF) : The prevalence of diabetes mellitus in heart failure populations is close to 20% compared with 4 to 6% in control populations. Epide...
